Brief 1:: Yearbook

After countless meetings and missed deadlines from the fashion department we finally got the poster back with numerous changes that Suzy wanted to make to the poster. Seen as the deadline was a week ago we spoke to Amber about whether it would actually be possible for us to complete the large task. Amber then met with Suzy to discuss the matter and it was decided that the poster would not go to print. She has told her students that the poster will only be used for our brief and they are not actually using it, therefore it is pointless spending all that money to print something which isn't going to be used.

I am a little bit disappointed that our poster is now not going to be printed after all the hassle we have been through with fashion. The amount of meetings we have had with them to discuss the matter and the amount of design variations we have produced in response to their feedback has all taken up valuable time of my FMP.

Nevertheless, what I am taking from this is the experience of working with a difficult client. Working on this live brief has meant this I have missed out on the opportunity of producing a nice piece of design but I have learnt how to deal with clients and what needs to be said and done to try and make it a smooth operation; something I wouldn't have learnt if it had all gone smoothly I suppose!

Brief 1:: Yearbook PDF

Myself, Simon and Chris have split the register to give ourselves an equal amount of students' double page spreads to work on.

I have begun to work on my students using the content we have been given.

These initial spreads will then be looked over by each of us and amendments made.

For now though, this is what I have been working on. I have been using as much white space as possible without impacting on the image size or quality as this is something that the fashion dept are keen to have within the designs. The white space has allowed each of the students work to remain clear and concise...

Brief 1:: Poster Development

In response to Suzy's feedback at our last crit, I have reworked the poster. I have played with a landscape format as this is something she asked for. I have tried to work with how the poster will fold down into a square and use these squares as guides for my design. I have positioned the fashion title so that it would be on the front panel and the students names on the opposite side when it folds down..

I also continued to work on a portrait design as I feel the design works a lot better in portrait format rather than landscape format.

Brief 1:: Fashion Poster Development

Taking elements from each of our designs, I have developed the poster further. Using a coding system to enable recipients to correctly identify each students work. The poster follows a grid format which will then be continued through to the PDF yearbook

Brief 1:: Print out Test

We have printed out the poster designs to see how the posters are going to work when they are folded down and how the images all work with one another. We have shortlisted two designs that we feel are going to work best together. We are now going to progress these designs to make them more consistent.

Brief 1:: Printers Quote

I have emailed the printers for a quote for the poster designs we are proposing to produce.

Brief 1:: Cover Design

I have quickly mocked up a cover design for the yearbook using some of the students images we have attained.

Brief 1:: Grid Structure

As I am wanting to use an obvious grid structure within my designs I have been researching design which already does this.

Brief 1:: Yearbook Poster

After countless meetings about meeting about meetings ...we have finally be told that fashion are now going to working with option 2: PDF yearbook and poster. Therefore we have begun to work on a poster design now that we have finally been given content from fashion to work with.

I tried using simple block images as I thought it would flow well with the pdf yearbook, however, it looked too simple and was not particularly visually engaging. So, I then began experimenting with using shapes in which the images can be cropped into. This will make the poster visually interesting as well as the crop of the images.

I will not know how this is going to work until we receive the final images from fashion, but this is how it is looking so far....

Brief 1:: Yearbook poster content

I have begun to format the content for each of the pathways. As there are two pathways on the same course, I want them to take the same format although the content will differ.

I have used a 9 column grid to make the grid more versatile whilst keeping to a structure.

Brief 1:: Images within shapes

As I want to make the poster visually interesting, we have been looking at using images within shapes which make up a pattern.

I think this approach to the design could work well in keeping the design visually interesting as well as presenting each of the students in a fair way.

Brief 3:: GF Smith Colour Samples

I ordered samples of GFSmith Colorplan to potentially use for Lavinia's business cards. I am going to use these to laser cut out the logo and triplex with lime green card, which will fit in with her colour scheme.

Brief 1:: Cover Mock-Up

We have created a mock-up of the cover design we want to propose. We are going to propose to that we use a students image of their work on the cover (selection of the student whose image is to be used will be down to the tutors).

The black box is a representation of the square format book but also covers quite a lot of the image so that the reader feels intrigued by the design and wants to read more.

We are also going to propose that the black box it UV spot varnished, as this will create a variation in texture and enable the publication to appear more professional.

Brief 1:: Yearbok Meeting

Today we had a yearbook meeting to discuss content for tomorrow's presentation to the fashion year students. We want to outline the content we are looking for so that they are on the same lines as us and essentially produce work that we can fit into the yearbook in this magazine format. We want to show them examples of this so they gain a visual understanding of what we want.

Brief 1:: Fashion Meeting

We had a meeting today with Paul (the fashion tutor) to discuss the following points:

He seems happy for us to use the name 'Made to Measure' as a title. We are going to mock up some visuals ready for a meeting Thursday next week at 12pm.

We also discussed the printers quotes and we think we are going to go for Option 2:

Size 210x210mm 4pp cover + 84pp text, cover printed 4 colours both sides on 280g uncoated, text printed 4 colours throughout on 100g uncoated and perfect bound.

Repro from disk

300 copies £ 2648.00

This will leave funds to use foiling on the cover and purchase a typeface for the title font. This is going to be verified next week after Paul has discussed this with his colleagues.

An estimate budget for this would be....

£2648 + £198 = £2846

(Extra to Foil one side only 150x50mm................£198.00)

£3000 - £2846 = £154

This £154 appx. can then be used to purchase a typeface.

Brief 1:: Meetings this week

We have a few meetings lined up with the fashion tutors this week, so have emailed the tutors to clarify these times.

Brief 1:: Square Format

As Suzy stated in our last meeting, our biggest challenge is going to be the square format of the book seen as most fashion shots are portrait format. Nevertheless, this is a creative challenge where we are sure we can making something of it.

We have come across a fashion publication which is also square format but utilises the space incredibly well, I think the main factor that determines this is the use of the landscape imagery. Therefore we need to ensure that the fashion students understand when they are brief that they need to supply us with landscape shots of their work in order for it to work effectively.

Brief 1:: Reply to Fashion Tutor

I have replied to Suzy's email to arrange a time to for our next meeting and inform her of what we wish to discuss.
