Design Context:: Generation Press

As my practice is highly concerned with print, I am going to focus my design context on how the boom of digital has affected the use of print in today's society.

Generation Press have informed my design practice over the past few years here on the course, the work they print is extremely high spec whilst at the same time concerned with environmental factors. I want to question (and possibly visit) Generation Press to see how/if their practice has been affected by the introduction of digital in comparison to lower end printers who don't specialise in high spec print.

Brief 1:: Fashion Meeting

We had a meeting today with Paul (the fashion tutor) to discuss the following points:

He seems happy for us to use the name 'Made to Measure' as a title. We are going to mock up some visuals ready for a meeting Thursday next week at 12pm.

We also discussed the printers quotes and we think we are going to go for Option 2:

Size 210x210mm 4pp cover + 84pp text, cover printed 4 colours both sides on 280g uncoated, text printed 4 colours throughout on 100g uncoated and perfect bound.

Repro from disk

300 copies £ 2648.00

This will leave funds to use foiling on the cover and purchase a typeface for the title font. This is going to be verified next week after Paul has discussed this with his colleagues.

An estimate budget for this would be....

£2648 + £198 = £2846

(Extra to Foil one side only 150x50mm................£198.00)

£3000 - £2846 = £154

This £154 appx. can then be used to purchase a typeface.

Brief 4:: Regions

I have been considering the possibility of colour coding the lottery tickets to the region in which each ticket is being handed out. If I were to do this across the UK this would be 11 different colour tickets. Consequently, for ease I think I may just colour code each country within the UK so there are only 4 different colours. There will then be 4 different creative lottery draws where 4 winners will be selected and allocated a prize.

To Do

Post Design Context Tutorial

In response to yesterdays design context tutorial I have re-considered how I am going to approach my design context brief. I am going to discuss this with Fred in a tutorial next week as suggested.

Brief 2:: Further Logo Development

I am trying to find a typeface that will sit well with the new logo we are now working with.

I have tried working with the typeface 'Avenir'

I also looked at using the typeface 'Avant Garde Gothic'

I think I prefer the Avenir typeface as it sits better with the logo. The kerning on both compliment each other well to produce an aesthetically pleasing design.

Brief 2:: Fashion Meeting

Today we had a meeting with the fashion show committee to show them the design we had come up with and check that they approved.

They were very accommodating to our concept of the two pathways of their course working as a visual representation and are happy for us to go ahead and use it.

We are now going to design a letterhead and email header that we can apply the logo to. We want the turn around of this to be fairly quick so they can begin to contact sponsors. We hope to get this to them either this evening or first thing tomorrow morning.

Brief 2:: Logo Development

James, Frankie and myself all designed logo to discuss today. The three of us decided on pushing Frankie's logo as we felt it had the most scope within the new concept of it representing the two pathways as well as the exhibition and catwalk that will be at the show. We worked together to consolidate the logo so that we were all happy with it.

Frankie and myself are now going to find a type that will sit well with the logo. This type will needto say 'the fashion showcase' in order to give the logo context.

James is going to work on designing a letterhead so that when we have finalised the logo we can immediately apply this to the letterhead and hand it over.

Notes from Design Context tutorial

Todays meeting with Fred has made me reconsider how I approach the design context brief. I now need to sit down and brainstorm what I want to get out of the brief and how to go about this. I am then going to book a tutorial with Fred next week to discuss the decisions I have made.

Design Context Tutorial

This morning I had my design context tutorial with Fred. In preparation for this I designed boards in the sections that I feel my contextual references would break down into.

Brief 1:: Meetings this week

We have a few meetings lined up with the fashion tutors this week, so have emailed the tutors to clarify these times.

Monday 25 February 2013

Print:: Perforations

The subtle inclusion of the perforation in order to open the publication allows the user to engage more with the print. It also add an edge of excitement. It is an easy and fairly cheap way of enhancing the audience's connection to the publication.

Print: Colour edging

The bright red colour edging works extremely well in creating a strong visual impact. The red colour appears very bold against the white of the cover and inner pages, it is eye catching and would make people want to more inclined to pick it up and read the publication.

Print Finishes

The foil blocked edging on these publications creates a massive visual impact on the overall aesthetic of the design. The publications have a sense of grandeur and great expense due to the high shine of the gold foil.

Print/Colour:: Eyecatching

This poster for a subway stands out from the usual posters you see around subway areas due to the bright spot colour it uses. It is a simple one colour print, but the use of this colour with the design makes it a lot more influential and people are more likely to stop and see what it is about.

Print Collateral

The minimal approach to this print collateral will enable the focus to be on the content of the prints rather than the design of the collateral. The closing mechanism of the envelope heightens the professionalism of the print collateral and also add a fun interactive element to something which could otherwise be quite dull.

Brief 5:: Paint splattered collateral

This print collateral uses paint splats to produce the colour of the designs whilst the type on the reverse side allows the collateral to remain sophisticated and professional. I think this design style could work exceedingly well with the paintballing brief.

Brief 2:: Fashion Show logo

I have been working on the logo design for the graduate fashion show titled 'NEU'. I began by considering what the logo needs to connote

I then started working with different typefaces to see what would work best.

We then decided to drop the 'E' from 'neu' so that the two letters reflected each other and also worked as a concept for their fashion show. We want the n and u to represent the two pathways on the fashion course but showing how they come together.

Brief 1:: Square Format

As Suzy stated in our last meeting, our biggest challenge is going to be the square format of the book seen as most fashion shots are portrait format. Nevertheless, this is a creative challenge where we are sure we can making something of it.

We have come across a fashion publication which is also square format but utilises the space incredibly well, I think the main factor that determines this is the use of the landscape imagery. Therefore we need to ensure that the fashion students understand when they are brief that they need to supply us with landscape shots of their work in order for it to work effectively.

Monday Briefing

Weekly time plan

Brief 1:: Reply to Fashion Tutor

I have replied to Suzy's email to arrange a time to for our next meeting and inform her of what we wish to discuss.

Brief 1:: Yearbook Meeting

We had another meeting this morning to discuss the concept and title for the yearbook. From the names we have all come up with, we have shortlisted the following names:

-Made-to-measure
-Tailored
-Unfold
-Progress
-Glimpse
-Impression
-View
-Unmarked
-Collected

Made-to-measure is probably our favourite as it connotes what the course is concerned with, it sound sophisticated but would also look professional when written on the front of the cover. We are also thinking that if we are going to purchase a typeface, it is going to be better to use more than one word for the title as we will be making the most of the typeface and our budget.

We are going to design some type sets of this to show the tutors at our next meeting, in order to enable them visualize the title.

Friday 22 February 2013

Brief 6:: Morgan Myerscough

Studio Website

This studio takes on a very dynamic and fun approach to their design. This could be very interesting to use as the content for one of my publications.

Brief 6:: Design Project

Leeds based design agency Design Project.

There is not much information about these designers other than their website, however, seen as they are based in Leeds this will provide me with the opportunity to visit them and gather some primary research.

Brief 6:: Made Thought

MadeThought website

MadeThought work on September Industry

MadeThought are a large design studio who have produced large amounts of high quality work, however, I am unable to find much information on them. This may not necessarily be bad I suppose as this supplement could be image heavy opposed to being very type driven; this could effectively creative diversity between the publications.

Brief 6:: Will Hudson

Will Hudson is co-founder of It's Nice that.

A self-initiated project

Eye Magazine article on Will

Waterfall Zine interview Will

Stack interview It's Nice That

There is a fair amount of information I have managed to find on Will Hudson, so he is a contender for being one of my three subjects.

Brief 6:: Patrick Burgoyne: Creative Review Editor

 Article by Burgoyne

About Patrick Burgoyne

We Are Build: Getting to Know Burgoyne

 I haven't been able to find out as much information about Patrick as I have about other speakers at The Typographic Circle, so this is a possible designer to feature.

Brief 1:: Name

I have been considering a potential name for the fashion yearbook and have thought that it may be an idea to use an animal that has a different name for the male and female genders. This would be creative and different, whilst also representing both the males and females within the course, as sign of equality.

Brief 1:: LCA Fashion Course

As we want to give the yearbook a different name, other than BA (Hons.) Fashion, in order to make it feel more creative and less dull, I have been researching into what the course entails here at LCA

Brief 1:: Fashion Show Name

Today I have been trying to come up with a name for the fashion show yearbook. I have looked at the the course prospectus to see what the course entails, I have then brain stormed words from this.

Thursday 21 February 2013

Brief 1:: Fashion Tutor Response

In response to yesterdays email, Suzy the fashion tutor has replied and answered our questions as best she could.

Brief 1:: Heaton Press Response

This afternoon a received an email reply from Heaton Press as well as a phone call in which Terry (the lovely printer man) just wanted to know what yearbook we were designing for and said that he'll get someone to draw me up a quote tomorrow.
