Team:: Print Visit

(litho plate being made)

Today, myself and Charlotte visited Simon at Team Impression printers. He took around his printers and talked us through the stages our artwork would go through, from repro to print and finishes. I think it was beneficial for us to see this first hand as it can inform our design decisions when we are designing. It can be all so easy to design forgetting the format necessary for the end product. We also now have a deeper understanding of the print finishes available to use and have seen first hand how these can be used to their advantage.

All in all, it was a worthwhile experience that has aided my development as a designer and allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of print which will in-turn enhance my work.

Design Context: BenoƮt Santiard Design Studio

The experimental layout of this publication engages the reader and makes the reading experience more fun. The difference in paper stocks throughout the publication also helps the audience enjoy the print. The change in colour of the papers also heightens the user experience as it ensures the reader remains engaged with the content throughout.

Print:: Perforations

The subtle inclusion of the perforation in order to open the publication allows the user to engage more with the print. It also add an edge of excitement. It is an easy and fairly cheap way of enhancing the audience's connection to the publication.

Print: Colour edging

The bright red colour edging works extremely well in creating a strong visual impact. The red colour appears very bold against the white of the cover and inner pages, it is eye catching and would make people want to more inclined to pick it up and read the publication.

Print Finishes

The foil blocked edging on these publications creates a massive visual impact on the overall aesthetic of the design. The publications have a sense of grandeur and great expense due to the high shine of the gold foil.

Print/Colour:: Eyecatching

This poster for a subway stands out from the usual posters you see around subway areas due to the bright spot colour it uses. It is a simple one colour print, but the use of this colour with the design makes it a lot more influential and people are more likely to stop and see what it is about.

Print Collateral

The minimal approach to this print collateral will enable the focus to be on the content of the prints rather than the design of the collateral. The closing mechanism of the envelope heightens the professionalism of the print collateral and also add a fun interactive element to something which could otherwise be quite dull.

Print:: Format

These publications all utilize a format other than the standard format, this makes them more exciting to the reader so they will be more inclined to engage with the content.

The diagonal perforation on this publication cover is a specialist print process which adds an element of interaction to the print.

Branding: Colour

The consistent use of colour and geometric shapes tie all the branded collateral together whilst at the same time keeping it fun and playful. The use of the brown paper makes the colours more prominent and eye catching to the viewer.

Print:: Small details

It is the smallest attention to details which often makes a publication come together and work. The simple use of the black vectored lines adds more dimension to the printed material. These details are something I need to consider when designing publications for print.

Branding:: Logotype

This branding uses a logotype and applies it to all the printed collateral. The gold colouring of the type allows it adopt a sense of worth and opulence. It works against both black and white stocks showing its diverse range of applications.
